Hi all
So since arriving to Canada I have been trying out various cards to find out what works for me, and also out of a grim fascination to see how a credit score can jump wildly up and down.
So right now I have the following:
CIBC Aeroplan ($4000) no annual fee - January 2022
TD Cashback ($1000) no annual fee - February 2022
Neo Financial (Secured card) no annual fee - April 2022
AMEX Aeroplan (No fixed limit) 120$ annual fee - July 2022
RBC Westjet Elite Mastercard ($2500) 119$ annual fee, first year waived - September 2022
So a few questions:
- Will the Neo card count adversely towards my credit score despite it being a secured card? At present this is a moot point since Neo doesnt report to Transunion and is unlikely to do so before far into 2023.
- For a newcomer with a Transunion score around 720 and Equifax around 630 how many credit cards should I keep? I don't care too much about my score right now other than the fun of it, since we purchased our car all cash, and will not be purchasing a home before 2025 at the earliest, but on the other hand no reason to keep too many cards if it hurts my score.
- If I apply for the Aeroplan Visa Infinite card with CIBC to replace my current no fee Visa Card, do I get credit hit, because I am "closing" my oldest card, by opening a new one?
My idea was to cancel just the TD cashback and then the AMEX next summer.
Thanks for reading, I do realize that all the opening and closing affects my score, which is why I figure getting it done now, will put me in a better position in year or two rather than waiting till then to close them?
