If I get multiple quotes from competing insurance companies, will that raise the premium to a higher rate?

I'm looking to get insurance for a car I just recently bought but I've been told that if I obtain multiple quotes from competing insurance companies, it will increase my premium.

Apparently, if one insurance company provides a quote, they add that inquiry to my consumer autoplus report, and the other insurance companies will refer to that quote when determining my premium. Is that correct? and if so how can obtain a quote without affecting my premium?
