Jobs that ask for pay range in the initial application

Post Body

A lot of job applications ask for a salary range. If you overstate, you might not be considered. If you understate, it will be used as leverage to give you a low offer. If you understate by a little "too much", you come off as inexperienced or not confident. These are usually unskipable questions as well.

If there's specific advice for a newbie applying to tech jobs, that's welcome as well.

How does one answer these?
