I messed up our tax filings and I need advice!
My common law partner and I filed jointly for first time this year. We just saw that my partner received a letter from the cra (why she received it and not me, i don't know) stating that the CRA requires proof of medical expenses that we reported. No problem, I say, we have the receipts.
Problem is, after pulling out the receipts I realize that a majority (i.e. $5000 out of $7000) that we reported were in fact expenses incurred in early 2023 and not in 2022 (the tax year in question).
What is the right move to make at this point? Do we send all our receipts as requested and not make mention of our newly discovered awareness/oversight that we mistakenly over reported medical expenses in 2022? Surely the CRA will see the dates on the receipts/invoices. Or do we send a letter of explanation at the mistake along with copies of the receipts?
Also, will we be facing a fine for false reporting on taxes (again, these were legitimate medical expenses, but they are not from 2022)? If so, is there any way to avoid this potential?
