I basically typed out a review for PSU Harrisburg on RateMyProfessor but since the character limit is only 350 and I didn't check before I started writing, I now have a multi-paragraph review that I cannot post. So here it is on Reddit.
Also, I'm basically using RMP's rating system.
Also also, I'm here for the 2 2 program as a Nuclear Engineer. There is a TLDR at the bottom.
Reputation: PSU Harrisburg is still Penn State, so the actual reputation of the school is pretty good. The curriculum is also mostly based off of UP's, so it's actually not bad. There are definitely some professors who aren't great, but you'll also find many who genuinely love teaching/their respective subject and are quite good at their job.
Location: 1/5
Location: It's called PSU Harrisburg, but it's a solid 15-18 minute drive away. The school is NOT in Harrisburg, it's in a podunk town in the middle of nowhere. If you don't own a car, you will struggle to remain a functioning independent adult on living on this campus.
Opportunities: 4/5
Opportunities: Despite PSU Harrisburg itself being in Middletown, its proximity to Harrisburg means that there's a decent amount of summer STEM internships for those who plan to move nearby for the 2 2 program, or their whole 4 years. If you're a soft-science major, Harrisburg being the capital of PA is an even greater boon for you.
Faculties/Commons: 2/5
Faculties/Commons: It's essentially a small community college in terms of look and feel. The main buildings of the University could do with some serious updating. The teaching facilities/labs are rather small and leave much to be desired as a student. The gym is actually totally fine, though.
Internet: 2/5
Internet: The wi-fi is totally fine and runs at a consistent speed/bandwidth for normal, school-related use. However, if you live on campus and need a reliable internet connection for, let's say, gaming, the dorms DO NOT have ethernet as of 2019 for some reason??? This was extremely frustrating to me as I found myself teleporting around lobbies on ping for large sections of the semester on wi-fi.
Food: 1/5
Food: The food is trash. It's horrible. It's really not very good at all. The food is super inconsistent; sometimes way too salty, sometimes completely unsalted; sometimes watery, sometimes as thick as glue. But, honestly, sometimes the food is completely FINE, which is what bugs me the most. If you're forced to buy the meal plan because you're living on campus, your money is much better spent on the prepackaged sandwiches/meals in the fridges/freezers. At least then the food will be consistent and you'll know what its macros are.
Clubs: 2/5
Clubs: It's not necessarily that the clubs here are bad, it's that they're dead and noone participates in them. If you have a hobby you'd like to get together with some people to have fun with, you're going to have to do that yourself.
Social: 4/5
Social: People who rate the social life so low are just really bad at making friends. The social life here is totally fine. The average quality of student at PSU Harrisburg is probably slightly lower than at the main campus, but if you know how to talk to and get along with people, and you're not so full of yourself that you think you're better than everyone, you'll make friends just fine.
Happiness: 4/5
Happiness: Totally subjective: I feel pretty content here. I'm away from home and I feel like if I work hard on my classes it will pay off. I look forward to the future because I know that what I'm working for matters to me even if where I am currently isn't exactly where I want to be.
Safety: 5/5
Safety: Never felt unsafe walking around at night on campus. The campus is very well lit and patrolled by campus police. A very quiet and safe campus.
Overall: 2.9/5
TLDR: The school really isn't that bad. Keep in mind "OK" is supposed to be a 2.5/5. There are some ways in which the school really needs to improve if it wants to attract/keep the typical 4-year student, but I think the school is a good deal given it's low cost and barrier to entry for so many students who maybe cannot attend at UP because of cost, or simply because they didn't get in and are going through 2 2. If you put effort into your work, as well as enjoying your time here, and/or remain focused on your long term goal, the mediocrity of the school won't hinder you at all.
