Hello all, I have typically suffered from UTI after sex so I was prescribed antibiotics to take post-coital. However, that eventually led to a series of recurrent yeast infection, which caused severe burning. Eventually I figured that I should keep some antifungals on hand to prevent yeast infections.
I also resorted to using boric acid suppositories to keep yeast infections at bay and that seems to be when the problem started. I experienced burning with insertion, which usually subsided after the suppository melted. There was this time when I inserted 1 suppository 2 days in a row and somehow I experienced severe pain in the vagina about 3 days later. The pain eventually went away after 5 days, as mysteriously as it started. I actually ended up going to a gynaecology for that but they couldn't find a cause. This was some time in early February this year.
The pain eventually came back in early March but seems to only occur on the left side of my vulva. The pain could be described as raw and stabbing. It also occasionally shifts to the right side of the vulva, sometimes spreading to the perineum as well. There is increased sensitivity around the clitoris. Lab tests for both UTI and yeast infections all came back negative so I eventually resorted to seeing a pain management doctor after the pain persisted for a week. I was prescribed Lyrica (Pregabalin) 25 mg to take twice a day and that helped for a while, until I had sexual intercourse with my BF. That seems to trigger the pain, and I went back to the doctor to ask for an increase in dosage. I was given Lyrica 75 mg to take twice a day, and that seemed to work for a while. I did not feel pain, but again, after some attempt to have penetrative sex, pain came back. My medication is now increased to 100 mg x 2 times a day.
I should also mention that I do have pain with penetration even before these episodes! But previously the pain only occurs at the vaginal opening and does goes away subsequently. I have never had pain post-intercourse that lasted for months like what I'm going through now.
I will be going back to my gynae some time this week and will raise this issue to her. I would like to advocate for myself and hence would like some advice on what my condition could be ): Not sure if it's relevant but, I recently did a pelvic ultrasound scan to find out whether I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and will be reviewing the scan during my gynae visit.
Any advice on this issue is greatly appreciated!
