Because the scum were Moseley's bodyguard. They haven't changed, No voters.

One part of this I couldn't work out was why Jimmy wasn't taken out by Churchill's own machinations, but my best guess is that the man from the UVF who let Tommy walk away from an execution (earlier in the show) had to be given a hiding place. If that hadn't been so, Jimmy may have been taken out by "internal politics" as one easy method of despatch. The two are inextricably linked.

I think you've misunderstood. Jimmy was Mosely's bodyguard and that's probably the only reason he wasn't immediately killed. While Tommy tried to sew doubt and outdo him, it was only to attempt to drive a wedge between the two and separate them so Mosely could be dealt with. Interestingly, there's photos of Mosely with them at the time in history.
One other statement that I took issue with was the "every pit north of the border" it was more like every pit till ten miles outside Glasgow. There's a historical goldmine there.
In my hometown they were ambushed and beaten so badly during the General strike trying to cross a picket line that four died as a result of their injuries. Locals armed themselves with lumps of iron slag and chased them into the Forth.
An interesting historical side note is that the soldiers posted to oversee this picket breaking didn't twitch, attempt to intervene or fire a shot. They defied an order to because of tunnelers and servicemen among the strikers, but also because one of the union leaders was the granddaughter of a decorated war hero.
The only reason the Glaswegians had thought themselves safe was that her husband was a member of the orange order but he immediately turned his back on them. As a result they were ambushed and had to be dragged out of the mudflats of the Forth.
The woman later served during WW2 as a labour combined cabinet minister for the Grey Market and Farming Board. Churchill, when asked why he'd appointed her (because she absolutely despised him and had berated and belittled him since the skirmish) replied that he wanted to hear the truth, not agreement unconditionally. If anyone was going to tell him he was in the wrong it would be her.
Unfortunately the division between those loyal to the British government and those who do the right thing still exists in that family.
The long and the short of it is though had anything happened to Mosely's bodyguard, it would immediately have aroused suspicion and compromised Churchill's whole operation to have him assassinated. A truce occured before the Shelbys or Golds could react to his transgressions, which was unfortunate as well because I'd have loved to have seen it too.
