Theory: Waller and the Butterflies were originally allies

Some time not long ago, the butterfly homeworld was compromised. The butterfly society was relatively peaceful and advanced, but still unprepared for the sudden cataclysm that wiped out most of their population. Their numbers drastically reduced, on a planet suddenly inhospitable from devastation, the butterflies took to space to find a new home.

Upon reaching earth, they believed they had found what they were looking for. An atmosphere that could sustain them and potable water were a necessity, food they could provide for themselves in an environment so well suited for a "cow". The only problem was predation. The fauna of this planet was particularly hostile compared to the butterfly homeworld. On this world, even rodents posed a significant threat.

It's here we come to Amanda Waller. A savvy, ruthless woman, we all know Waller to be the kind of person with her ear to the ground and finger on the pulse. So naturally she was one of the first ones to be privy to the new discovery that a race of diminutive insectoid aliens was attempting to make a home on earth.

Whether Waller was the one who sent out a team to retrieve specimens for autopsy, or experiments had already been conducted by others by the time she found out about the butterflies is unclear. But tests had shown that the butterflies possessed an ability that they were not even aware of, the ability to infest and control a much larger host, and impart them with increased physical prowess. Waller assumed the butterflies had no idea they had this ability, as a creature that could take over a much larger predator would have had no need to evolve the intelligence the butterflies clearly show.

As we all know, one of Waller's favorite passtimes is building personal teams and armies to do her bidding. The Starro experiment. Various suicide squads. I'm sure there are more clones and cyborgs I don't remember off the top of my head. Well, finding out about this ability gave Waller a great idea. She would manipulate these creatures into an alliance and gain a personal army of super soldiers while doing it.

Goff accepted this offer readily. With a supply of bodies to wear as protection for her people, she'd be working with the most apex of predators on this world, the humans, and hopefully keep her struggling race alive. But as we all know, Waller's deals come at a cost. Time and time again, butterfly soldiers were sent out on missions that were increasingly barbaric. We've seen that Waller has no qualms ordering the execution of children, and she assumed the aliens wouldn't either. But what she didn't know is that this possession gave the butterflies access to their host's memories. As time went on, the butterflies could no longer fool themselves into believing what Waller did was for a good cause. The memories of the people whose bodies they'd taken, some of them were bad people, but most of them were innocents caught up in someone else's conflict. Prisoners of war. Abandoned children. Slaves.

The butterflies fled. Stealing and perfecting some of the US government's experimental teleportation technology, they moved the cow to a safe location so Waller couldn't hold it over their heads, and proceeded to infiltrate human society in an attempt to remove people like Waller from power, not so much anymore out of the desire to help the humans who were unwittingly shielding them, but to make the woman who manipulated their people pay.

One butterfly, however, didn't agree with his people's plans. The man that had once been Clemson Murn was rotten to the core, and there were more men out there like him. The butterfly in his head didn't particularly like Waller, but from the sociopathic memories locked up inside him, believed that her methodology, while brutal, was necessary for reigning in human depravity. So Murn and Waller teamed up, creating the butterfly brigade as we know it today. Waller set up a team, including a scapegoat to take the fall after all the butterflies were destroyed, to cover up her involvement.

It's a stretch, I know, but James Gunn is excited for a big twist in episode 8 and this seems possible from what we know of everyone involved so far. Thoughts?
