The risk of esd

I understand the grounding yourself technique, whether it be with wrist strap or metal part that is grounded, etc.

But what are the risk if one is not necessarily doing direct contact with mobo or circuits?

Like installing a psu and just connecting things? Or handling the GPU by the outer casing and not the circuit boards? Is this risky to do without grounding yourself?
