RAM upgrade

I used to have only one stick of 8gb Corsair ram, but a while ago I upgraded by adding 2x8gb of Aegis ram. I didn't notice much of a difference back then. Now I've noticed my computer has had more trouble running multiple things and want to upgrade. Should I replace my old ram, as maybe the brands weren't compatible or should I just add on which would be more beneficial?
