I've never played a necromancer before, but my DM has the following custom race available in his world:
https://www.worldanvil.com/w/aldebaran-capitulize/a/amuru-shi-species
Some of the highlights:
Negative Energy Affinity (Ex): Though a living creature, an amuru'shi reacts to positive and negative energy as if it were undead—positive energy harms it, while negative energy heals it.
Death Magic (Ex, Su): Amuru'shi add 1 to the DC of any necromancy spells that they cast. In addition, Amuru'shi are capable of casting the spell Animate Dead once per day. The caster level for this ability equals the Amuru'shi's class level.
Aura of Ill Fortune (Su): An Amuru'shi's presence brings about misfortune to any that would dare be next to one. Any creature within 20ft of an amuru'shi must roll two d20s whenever a situation calls for a d20 roll (such as an attack roll, a skill check, or a saving throw) and must use the lower of the two results generated. This is a mind-affecting effect that does not work on feline animals, cat-like creatures, other amuru'shi, amurruns, or undead. Any character who gains any sort of luck bonus (such as that granted by a luckstone or divine favor) is immune to the amuru'shi's aura.
So:
- Built-in Animate Dead, 1/day, from level 1. This seems crazy strong.
- Creatures within 20 ft roll twice and take the worse result. Also crazy strong.
- Heal from negative energy - seems exploitable somehow.
What would be an interesting character build for this? We're starting from Level 1, so options are limited, but I was thinking of playing a straight Wizard, spend 5 of my starting gold on animating a Bloody Skeleton (probably just a generic Orc, unless there's something better?) with a flying familiar for utility. From there I can cast save-or-die spells like Cause Fear while hiding behind my minion. I figure I can use Infernal Healing to heal myself or others as needed.
Thoughts? I'd like to keep it relatively simple if possible - getting a bunch of differently-flavored options from various sources will probably make it less appealing, and I'm somewhat intimidated at the amount of bookkeeping a large quantity of undead minions could entail.
