I'm looking for ideas to get my players together and started on a larger storyline.

Right now the larger storyline is a coven of witches wanting to summon an ancient evil. Unbeknownst to the coven, their leader will betray them to turn himself into a Lich. (The group will fail at preventing this, launching the next part of the campaign.)

Now to perform this ritual they are gathering powerful artifacts around the world.

My idea to get the campaign started and the group fighting together is for there to be an attack on the market in town by multiple skeletons/zombies... They then realize the culprit and chase him, from which they'll slowly start unveiling the plot.

Any ideas how to go about the fight towards them chasing the culprit and unveiling the plot?
