I need some advice for my rogue

So I'm pretty new at this and I'm looking for some advice on what I need to do to get my halfling rogue where I want to take him. As a character, he just leveled up to third level and I was about to start updating the character sheet so I figured I'd ask the experts. I want to give him a bit of alchemist flavor without actually multiclassing. Through a series of strange events and a creative back story, my dm gave him craft alchemy as a skill so that's covered. Any advice would help. Thanks!
