Use a lance two handed or wield a shield?

When you are fighting mounted, what would be better, using your lance two handed and gaining extra damage from your strength and power attack or wielding a shield and gaining the AC increase?
Or does a lance count as a Two Handed Weapon whilst being wielded in one hand on horseback?
