I don't like XP. How do you feel about XP?

It takes about 20 APL CR encounters to level up. You can reduce the time by having harder encounters. In 10 sessions of about 4 hours each, my party has had 6-ish encounters in that time. The party had gone through 2 major plot arcs and 2 side quests in that time.
Does anyone else see this as a problem? Am I just too unfocused on combat?
Edit: I level PCs up when I think they've progressed the plot enough.
