Can I play as a ghost/undead?

So, for context, in the campaign I'm in, Skulls and Shackles (pirate themed, yarr), some things might happen story wise, and I'll be making a new character. I was hoping to play a character who was a captain, but who's crew (and himself) where sacrificed for some reason not yet determined. What I'm hoping for is his spirit coming back as a Oath of Vengeance paladin and get revenge for himself and his men. Is there a way I'd be able to do that? Templates, races, anything. I'm starting from a blank slate, so all suggestions are welcome!
