That is to say, actually taking levels in the class, rather than just dipping one level to get Secret of Magical Discipline.
I had thought for a long time that the Loremaster was a nice flavorful option if you want to focus on Knowledge skills and generally being a knowledgeable character, even if it was generally underpowered otherwise. But I realized today, it only gives you three bonuses to that end: half your Loremaster level to Knowledge (caps at 5, and you can get 4 from either of two wizard capstones), bonus languages (not a concern for a high-Int character), and a 10 bonus to Spellcraft to identify magic items (actually nice, especially since it stacks with identify, but you can get your Spellcraft high enough as a wizard that you'll rarely need it).
So if you want to make a big smarty pants lore guy, it's kind of just Stormwind Fallacy to dip into Loremaster, since wizard and bard are plenty good at that while also getting useful class features (or, in wizard's case, useful capstones, familiar progression, and a million better prestige class options). So is there any build for which Loremaster's other abilities besides Secret are worth it? Is there any way to max this min?
