I was helping my players with a level-up, and we noticed the level 11 general feat "A Home In Every Port". Not every feat can be good, and some can be incredibly niche, but I genuinely can't think of any reason to take this one.
"You have a reputation in towns and villages you've visited, and residents are always willing to open their doors to you. When in a town or village, during downtime, you can spend 8 hours to locate a resident willing to provide lodging for you and up to six allies for up to 24 hours at no charge. The standard of living within the acquired lodging is comfortable, and square meals are provided at no cost. After 24 hours, you must pay standard prices for further lodging and meals or use this feat again to find a new resident willing to host you."
It essentially allows one player to turn downtime into free lodging for the party. But why would you ever want to take this? In most settlements, the party could find somewhere better to stay for the night, and by level 11 they almost certainly don't need to stop at the tiny settlements that lack an inn. If the problem is the price, then the party is either literally penniless or they are staying in an insanely expensive rural area, given that the feat doesn't list city as an option. Even if city was an option, the price still probably wouldn't matter for a level 11 party.
So if the party somehow ends up in an area where no one knows them as heroes, and they are too proud to camp, and they lack any magic items or casters that could assist them in making a shelter, and all of the previous logic is correct, then the only reason to pick this feat is to flex on random peasants by making them host the party.
Which... Is fine I guess for roleplay reasons, but its also a kinda boring feat since it just takes away any dramatic suspense from characters being entitled/broke. Can any of you guys think of a good reason to take this feat? Or what kind of campaign arc it would take to make this work?
Situational for sure. Really depends on your table, but I can see a feat that forces the DM to give PCs a place to rest in enemy territory not being useless.
