Weapons as Improvised Shields?

I have a player who is asking if there is an official ruling on how to use a weapon as an imporvised shield and what the stats would be? Specifically he wants to use great weapons as shields.
I am planning on making him a homebrew if there is no solid ruling on this, only for wide items though, I might rule out polearms. But I would like to know also how I discern an item's HP and BT? Weapons don't really say, x3. But is there actually a way to know, for example, a Greatsword's HP?
