Do you generally double the damage on critical spell attack rolls if there's nothing written in the spell about it?
Post Body

As title says. I was looking at the new spell Percussive Impact and noticed the absence of "double the damage on a critical success" or similar.

I went through other spells that use spell attack rolls and noticed a few that don't mention doubling the damage on a critical hit, noticable Disintegrate, amongst others.

The Critical Hits rule states that critical strikes deal double damage, but other attacks such as spell attack rolls instead describe the effects that occur on a critical success. I didn't find anything that would support generally doubling the damage if nothing else is declared.

This makes me wonder if we might have done this wrong.

Spells that are affected:

  • Acid Splash (only adds persistent damage)
  • Briny Bolt (in the heightened version the crit would be 4d6 2d6 per heightened level, instead of simply double damage)
  • Disintegrate (crit only decreases the degree of success of the subsequent saving throw)
  • Hydraulic Push (in the heightened version the crit would be 6d6 2d6 per heightened level, instead of simply double damage)
  • Murderous Vine (simply has no mention of any critical effect)
  • Percussive Impact (only adds deafened effect)
