So I played through the Beginner Box, and am now planning to run it as a GM for a few of my friends. One thing I noticed as a player was how cramped the maps felt.
Pathfinder feels like it has theoretically tactical and deep combat, but without any room to maneuver most combats I've been in have become stationary slugfests. And taking movement increases felt useless because in most situations the enemies are all within 25 feet anyways. Same thing with long-range abilities like Daze and Longbows, their power budget takes their range into account and they almost feel like trap options if this range never comes into play. (this cramped map issue is also something I noticed in Kingmaker, but I just finished chapter 1 and I'm holding out hope that once we get out of the mansion the maps will get a bit larger).
I will be running on Foundry VTT, so I had the idea to just halve the grid sizes. I've already tested this out and it doesn't mess with the walls or anything so it would be a very quick change, but I wanted to fully think it over and get some opinions.
Here are a few potential pitfalls I recognized and my ideas for mitigating them, Beginner Box spoilers ahoy:
- Double-stride feelsbad: Melee characters will often have to double-stride to reach any enemies at the beginning of encounters. I think for this I would just bring a few of the enemies closer initially so that there are some baddies to swing at on their first turn. Maybe it can be a teaching moment for the Ready action though?
- Alice in Wonderland effect: Props will look kind of big compared to the players. Kind of will just have to live with that if I decide to go with this
- Ranged advantage: Enemies such as the Kobold scout and Zolgran become very difficult to reach for melee characters, requiring upwards of 5 Strides. This feels like it could be punishing and make the fights harder than intended. At least for my runthrough as a player, it ended up being a ranged battle between her and our gunslinger, so not sure how much that would change.
- Can't jump across Zolgran's pit: Would lose out on the opportunity to teach the players about leaping, and the players would have to go around the pit.
I'd like to hear all of your thoughts on this idea. Still not even 100% convinced that I'll be doing it, and even if I do I'll let my players know that this is homebrew and I can change it back at any time. Does this sound crazy? Are there any unforeseen consequences that could happen from doing this?
