I'm from similar systems that are just different enough that using other systems as examples for making character sheets will backfire badly. Examples such as trying to be a dex fighter before realizing strength is the more important stat anyway, or picking feats that aren't as good as they sound. I got fed up with trying to figure it out on my own and messaged my DM asking if he could help me focus on optimizing my sheet, and all he said was "it's your character, I'm not supposed to help you and it wouldn't be fair."
Is he legit? I dropped the campaign at that point. It's just way too overwhelming to figure out the nuances when I'm brand new.
Edit: thanks to everyone for reassuring me about how most DMs play. Everyone in that party I'd talked to after had normalized him approaching character creation that way. They all didn't mind so I assumed it's table preference or the sort of vibe Pathfinder has, glad to hear I was wrong.
