I'm trying to build a ascendant smite build but I seem to lack dps and survivability.

I'm level 39 and trying to get through the ascent but get wrecked and I have a hard time killing rare monsters. My dps is about 2k and I have my resistances in the 40s to 50s depending on the resistance. What am I doing wrong? I feel like I should have higher dps and maybe be able to survive better?
