A power of attorney is a document that you sign giving someone authority to act on your behalf. It is usually financial (although some states also have a medical power of attorney, which other states call a health care proxy). If you are competent, you can sign one. It almost never gives the person you grant power to the authority to have you held in a psych facility against your will.
What you're thinking of is a guardianship. That has a very high bar, and the process varies widely by state. In Lin's case, it would be near impossible to get. Some states let family request a 72 hour hold but not all do. I don't know if where he is they could ask for one. However, I don't think it would keep.
He may be crazy, but he is not danger-to-self-and-others crazy. He is not waving a knife around. He is alert, coherent, and he is aware of time (when he is), place (where he is), and person (who he is). It would be very hard for his family to do something.
