(Need Advice) I Don't Want Another Fees Job, but it's my Backup
Post Body

This winter I've been working a fees position and not enjoying it to say the least. For next summer, I'm really hoping to get another Park Guide or Ranger position doing Interp. (I've had these positions before. They're not new to me.) But, I'm not as flexible with my location this summer because I'll be getting married next August and I need to be reasonably close to my hometown. So, I'm considering fees as my backup if I can't get an Interp position.

But, here's my problem. The fees jobs always seem to get back to me first and start interviews/job offers first, probably because they're posted first. I don't know how to best navigate this. I know I won't really get to see all my options at the same time and make a choice, but I also don't want to agree to a fees position and then back out because something better came along.

Any advice?

I don't mind doing fees if it's part of a job and not the entirety of one. For example, it makes me really happy to issue Access Passes and Military Passes. I've had two jobs where I did both fees and interp and they were my favorite of the jobs I've had. I like the mixture of duties and schedules. I never got bored at those places.

My current job is one where I'm stuck in the entrance booth for 5-9 hours per day having nearly the same 30 sec interaction over and over and over again. I find it incredibly boring and it doesn't challenge or excite me. Let's put it this way: my favorite part of the day is when the computer fails and I have to fix it or call the IT department.

I'm a former theater kid, so getting a GS 5 position would sweeten the pot regarding a fees job, but I'd still rather be a GS 4 Park Guide doing campfire programs every night.
