Adhd kids and the prolonged need for supervision
Post Body

Today on the way home from school I was once again reminded about the fact that adhd kids require more supervision for longer into their lives than their NT peers. It's one thing I wish NT parents could understand but fortunately for them it's just not something they have to experience.

After school my 8 year old attempted to run across the street without checking both ways. I had seconds before verbally warned him that there was a car behind us which I normally and we also hold hands everytime we walk on the road.

It was raining so I had an umbrella in one hand. My eldest calls me after school to check if he has to walk or if I drove so I was answering my phone at the same time.

Thankfully I am used to not being able to let my guard down with him and I was able to use my umbrella to stop him from running any further into the road. It's golf course umbrella so it's huge and sturdy and stopped him easily. The car was very close to hitting him still and it was scary for both of us still.

Most parents I feel don't have to hold an 8 year olds hand every day. I've practiced with him for years and years crossing the street safely. But unfortunately his body sometimes just moves so much faster than his brain.

This is just one way that Adhd kids need us more than other kids to stay safe. If your child feels like they have a death wish and you need to supervise them more than your friends do with their kids you're not alone!

I love this sub so much. Y'all remind me that I'm not the only parent going through this. My 8yr old daughter very rarely looks both ways before crossing the road. It causes me so much anxiety!
