Daughter not motivated at school

My daughter is 12 and extremely intelligent, however we cannot motivate her to keep up on school work. Taking the smartphone away, which is the only currency she cares about, happened today. How can I get through to her that school work is important to her future? We expect her to do very little around the house currently just get through remote learning until in person can resume. What can I do at this point? It’s only the first quarter and she’s failing already.
