Maximising employability as an Aussie grad
Post Body

Just finished my first week of paramedicine at uni! Found out the course I'm in has 300 students - double the amount from last year.

I did a lot of research before starting this degree and I'm aware of how competitive it is for jobs in Australia. I'm willing to move for a job but it is pretty wild to me knowing that it'll be even harder than I expected, especially if other unis have doubled their enrollment numbers.

I don't have a healthcare background but I was thinking of getting a job in disability support while I study. Volunteer hours are a requirement of the course. Aside from getting amazing grades and applying for every single job I can worldwide after I graduate, is there anything else I should be thinking of?

Considering even switching to part time uni and working as a patient transport officer to improve my chances.

Most of the 300 students are 18 and fresh out of high school but I'm spooked nonetheless.

Hey mate, just graduated and have applied for QLD, NSW, and Tassy. I start with NSW in April, but had my face-to-face assessments with QLD a few days ago.

I’ve heard they look for experience more than your GPA, so look into volunteer (or paid) healthcare positions. Apply for event-medic jobs if they’re available in your area! I worked in disability beforehand, but currently work in healthcare and volunteer with an end-of-life program at a local hospital - I’ve learned a lot through these opportunities!

When the time comes, keep up to date with the dates they open up their applications, QLD was only open for a week. You must have your manual drivers licence to apply for QLD, so if you don’t have that make sure you do it before you graduate!

And always put your hand up to do the scenarios, they’ll help a lot.
