Ice on burns?

I'm not a paramedic. All my life I have applied ice to minor burns. I thought everybody did this. Now I just saw something from the Mayo clinic that said use lukewarm, not cold ,water. Is ice bad for burns? Did they change this? Was there a time when ice was recommended?
