Source Forge vs. Material Forge

People say that you should switch to the Material Forge for late game. When do you guys consider it a good time to switch to the Material Forge?
After you pick up most of the purples available from Source Forge? After you get past a certain level of chapter? After you have picked up most of the golds from Source Forge, or have enough golds so they aren't appealing anymore?
It'd be nice to get some discussion about which forge is better at what stages of the game.
