My dad's phone number and bank account were hacked recently. Just a while ago, he messaged me, expressing his concern that his bank account was compromised after clicking a link he found online for a part-time online seller. He ended up giving away all his details. My youngest brother has my dad's ATM card, and they're all in the province while I'm in Manila. It baffles me that I opened my dad's message at midnight. He explained he wanted to explore additional income sources, but what bothers me are a few things:
- Growing up, our parents would scold and punish me for normal kid mistakes. Now that they're adults, they're making similar errors.
- As the eldest, I've emphasized online vigilance to them repeatedly, yet they fall victim to scams despite being informed.
- Three capable adults in the province, but their problems need to be addressed in Manila and sent back to the province for resolution.
- Having overcome personal struggles without seeking help, it's ironic that I'm now expected to fix their problems.
I'm frustrated, disappointed, and shocked at their shallow crisis-handling abilities. They lack quick solutions. I've instructed my brother to withdraw all the cash, and my dad to take leave and visit the bank early tomorrow to resolve the issue and change his number. It feels like a reverse card situation, and if you've read this, remind your parents to be skeptical of such scams.
