What size is this in US? (Pants)

Looking to buy a pair of pants but these measurements don’t make sense to me. I am a size 32 waist (17 inches across) in the US normally and if I followed these measurements, my waist would be 43 which is the largest size possible. I am by no means a big guy.
My measurements: 5’8 height= 172cm 170 lbs or 77 kg
I know I’m not the only person who gets annoyed with these size conversions. Please send help 🙏
