Dear fellow redditors,
it has been two days now since the first news of the Panama Papers went live. Not long after, this subreddit was created to provide a platform to share, discuss and analyze the tremendous amount of breaking news stories. It has been a hectic few days for all of us involved. A tsunami like wave of new allegations being published, the media coverage and the outcry from the public has swept through all forms of media. This was accompanied by a substantial degree of early guess-work, witchhunting, and just a general wave of hysteria (and that rightfully so).
However, now that the intitial rush appears to be over, emotions have settled down a bit and regular redditing has resumed to some extent, the opportunity to guide this sub into the desired direction has finally presented itself. Quite a few users have voiced their concerns with direction this sub appeared to take. Yet another Why isn't anything published on the US?, Where can I find ALL the guilty people? or just lazy submissions of articles that had been posted several times before have been seen quite frequently. The amount and quality of feedback we received is fantastic. Thank you very much for your concern and your help. We have taken all the raised concerns into account and a few changes to both submission guidelines and moderation policy are coming.
In order to encourage quality content and discussion, we are adopting stricter submission guideslines and overall stricter moderation approach.
It is our aim to make this subreddit the first address anyone looking for information on the #PanamaPapers. For this to become a reality, the quality of both linked sources and discussion surrounding them, needs to be maintained. We have seen this happen on this sub already, and we very much want to facilitate just that. However we also have seen a lot of the other side. Poorly researched articles, copy-paste attempts at journalism or just flat out wrong statements have accumulated. This also includes refraining from any speculation regarding possible involvement of people in your submissions.
This by no means is intended to silence any side of the argument, nor infringe on peoples' ability to discuss the leak. Neither is it our intent to completely rid this sub of quality humor and amusing content. Outrageous conspiracies or overly polticized subjects such as the U.S. presidential race however, should be confined to their respective subreddits.
In order to maintain order and proper discussion culture on this sub, the enforcement of the rules, as specified in the sidebar will be tightened. Continued or outstandingly blatant violation of the submission or commenting rules will result in your being temporarily banned from the subreddit without a warning.
Finally, to assure that we can curate the content of this subreddit to the best of our abilities, we heavily rely on you guys reporting any infringements. And again, if you have feedback, do not hestitate to contact us.
So let's keep digging,
your friendly /r/PanamaPapers moderators.
Tl;dr: To keep this sub streets ahead, we will have to tighten the enforcement of the rules, and reduce the amount of speculative posts
Edit: We have updated the rules you guys can choose from when reporting posts. This should allow us to better understand why a post was reported and make a better decision based on it.
