Hi, I'm a panafricanist black American looking to live in a west African country for an extended period of time, mainly to connect with black people in another part of the diaspora and understand how we can strengthen connections diasporically. It seems like the easiest way to do this is volunteer work. I do extensive volunteer work in my own community, and I feel like volunteering in another country will help better my efforts here in my own city. However, as I've been doing research I've realized that orgs like the Peace Corps perpetuate neocolonialism and emphasize western intervention. Although I consider all black people oppressed under global anti blackness and that axis of oppression connects us all, I also understand my privilege as a black person in America. I'm starting to think any form of volunteer work I would do in Africa is imperialistic by nature, and the last thing I would want to do is perpetuate white supremacy and western disruption. Is it possible for me to volunteer in Africa in a non imperialistic way? If not, what other ways could I visit an African country in a nonintrusive way (if that's possible)? Any resources to learn more about western imperialism in Africa and visiting Africa in an ethical way would be greatly appreciated!
