1 Gold Chest costs 9k VIP points in the Store. But Hi-Rez wants to help you convert them 10k -> 1 Gold Chest - what gives? The cost goes even lower if you have VIP (kudos to /u/thechangenow for the mention)

Of course this only applies to those below 150k VIP points, since above 150k you start to get Diamond Chests.
