One of my biggest "problems" with Paladins is the scope of the world and the size of everything. The world's scope just feels like an open world mmo. All the buildings and everything in the world feels small. I remember someone had a post where they talked about it and I agree.
For instance look at other FPS games.
TF2's maps are very tight knit and close.
Overwatch maps have corridors and inner buildings and verticality. There's different floors and different ways to gank and move around. You can jump from building to building as some characters and there's a lot of mobility.
CSGO is the least "cartoon" out of all the FPS's I mentioned but the different callouts (catwalk, mid, doors, boxes) lead to good strategizing and call outs.
Right now (at least to me), Paladins feels like a first person Smite with no minions and ammo count.
The maps are still way too big and it feels like an mmo. Roaming around on your mount and getting to the fights is ok.
I really don't know how to describe it but he map design of Paladins is just boring compared to other FPS games.
Edit: I logged on today and played some Payload. The Payload maps are definitely a step in the right direction. They're fun and have verticality. The only problem I have with it is that sometimes if your pushing, your Payload will get camped and then you can't really do much at that point. Once the enemy gets their footing on the Payload they can camp it hard and no chance of comeback.
Edit 2: The new Payload map Serpent Temple (I think?) is a HUGE HUGE step in the right direction. I had genuine fun playing it. There were many points to gank from. It wasn't just one big open field to fight in. There were corridors, choke points, multiple entryways, etc. There are actually many ways to play the map. I played Kinessa for 2 games and honestly, (completely honest) I had a lot of fun. I might even say more fun than I had with TF2.
As long as Hirez can keep THIS quality of map coming out for us then I'm happy. The game could be a nice alternative to Overwatch (super hyped for it. Preordered the Origins Edition and everything). Obviously, there's still other issues such as balancing and what not, but if this is the set example of the quality of maps that we will get, I'm sold.
Gj HiRez, just keep it up.
