It was on this day ten years ago, July 12th 2013. Guillermo del Toro and Travis Beacham released one of the most underrated movies in the special effects (็นๆฎ, tokusatsu) giant monster (ๆช็ฃ, kaiju) vs robots ( ใกใซ, mecha / meka) genre called Pacific Rim. A special showing is being done in Los Angeles, California for the 10th Anniversary and no news of it was even mentioned.
For every 2 mins that went by, Legendary Pictures spent $3 million. With the combined efforts of Industrial Light and Magic, Mirada Studios, & Rodeo Effects, one of the most visually stunning movie ever produced was created. The scale, the CGI, the four story high real-life set designs, and the battles between the Kaiju and Jaegars all flowed together in a world so similar to ours. Not even Michael Bay's Transformers could match the attention to detail. You can feel the weight of the Jaegars and the Kaiju from how they moved.
The desperate struggle between humanity and hell bent giant monsters, del Toro and Beacham tells you everything at the beginning in the first 3 mins and the story keeps going without wasting time. I watch this on my 7th month during my 2-year internship at Tucson six times at Park Place and Harkins. The excitement of the audiences combined with, sound the Dolby Atmos system made those summer weeks some of my best times in Arizona.
