I'm a noob and Need some advice please

So i have started playing in random squads. When i engage an enemy my team mates are asking me what number are they at ? I also here them shout out numbers. Now i get it's to do with using the the map and pinpointing the location to help others but can't seem to figure this out. Now i see there's a grid with a letter and a number but they just shout a number. I'm missing something here really simple i know. Please help reddit, it would seem i am stupid. Thanks in advance
