Given my very first vr experience was the psvr on the Playstation 4, I managed to pre-order the psvr 2... although late.
I've been looking into various vr games over the years from pc and beyond, and honestly. The psvr kinda lacked in comparison to the pcvr games, I'm not saying psvr didn't have great games. But it didn't get variety and versatility like the pcvr games.
Now to be fair, I didn't buy all games that caught my attention or purchased the ones I wanted to play. So my titles are very limited.
Mostly I played Skyrim, No Man's Sky, Firewall, Star Wars: Squadrons, and occasionally I played a few others but not important enough to put on here.
In regards to the psvr 2, I've been watching the games and there's a few I'm super excited about. Games like Pavlov, Ghost of Tabor, After the Fall, Resident Evil 8, and The Walking Dead chapters.
I purchased 4 of these a couple weeks back in anticipation, while I wait for the delivery date of the psvr 2 unit.
I'm a little curious about Firewall, but I don't know if I'll buy it, in my opinion Firewall was... in a small way spoiled for me. So I stopped playing Firewall after like 2 years of the tweaks and changes.
I'm a little curious to see if they're keeping the changes or if they're adopting a new stance, I'm not at all keen on the idea of using eye tracking to select my equipment and weapons. It is my hope that this is an option... as I'd rather forego this and just use gestures
Using my belt or vest to grab my equipment, swap weapons, etc.
As for the games between both console vr units and pcvr, I think pc beats console vr games. By this I mean, by versatility and variety.
I once showed my mom the psvr games we had and she wasn't all that impressed, especially since most of them are more like the equivalent of cartoon based graphics, and there not being any games she was interested in trying. While a few of the experiences she had some enjoyment out of... it wasn't something she could get into.
After showing her some pcvr games, she showed more interest there. But not enough to encourage the investment.
While I understand there is a difference between pc and console based games, and while I'm happy to see some pc ports coming to the psvr 2, I still say we need more.
I've reached out to various Game studios and Sony, to encourage more vr focused games.
Stating they need to be longer than 6 hours, more than just cartoon based graphics, versatility, and variety.
The vr is great with horror, fps, survival based genres... and there are plenty of those, and yes. We could use more.
But we need more, a lot more. We need an actual sports genre. Something that allows the player to play an actual game, play by play, moment by moment.
Not a silly pogo stick in a uniform, but an actual player based team. I understand licensing and copyright, I also understand that not all players of vr are immune to vr motion sickness.. Much like my sister who gets sick after seeing a stream water from Robinson.
So I understand the use of vignettes and these mechanics are put in place for those individuals... But for players like myself, I've never experienced motion sickness and have really long play sessions.
The players who aren't affected needs the ability to remove any and all number of vignettes in place. For example when playing Blood and Truth, there's a moment when you get to feel like an action hero, jumping off an exploding high rise... and it was spoiled by the whole time slowed effect.
While cool yes... I was left a little disappointed. Vignettes like these should be an option to be removed by the players choice.
Many other games have this vignette effect, and not only this but not all games give you free movement, some small way of a point and click, like in the case of Killing Floor or more accurately Bravo Team.
Both great games... But I would've had more enjoyment if I could have free movement.
I reached out to Rare a couple days ago, and suggested they make a port of Goldeneye 64 to the vr platform.
How cool would it be to live and play through the eyes of James Bond 007, to play the entire game of Goldeneye 64 on vr?
Imagine the multiplayer aspect, let alone the single player version of the game... I don't expect Rare to consider this undertaking, but still.
It goes to say we need more on vr. We need more games, versatility, and variety. As this will open up the player base significantly.
Imagine playing as Spiderman, and web sling in between buildings and free fall the hight of the Empire State building, using the aerodynamics all through the eyes of Spiderman. To see Doctor Octopus face to face, or to be dwarfed by Rhino or Kingpin and go in a Creed style hand to hand combat with the infamous villains, all with free movement and without any vignettes.
Or how about through the eyes of say Billy the Kid, Doc Holiday, Jesse James, Pat Garrett in a western setting of some tumbleweed town from the movies without the cartoon graphics, but like Red Dead for reference.
Imagine having a dogfight in the skies above Earth, in space, on a distant planet surface, or even oceanic submarine battles, naval warfare of old battles or fictitious wars. Without point an click movement, vignettes, because the player made the choice to experience these moments without said restrictions.
It's just my opinion.
