PSLF Question - Am I past the 120 payments and owed a refund? Need advice on the next steps
Post Body

Hi everyone,
Hoping for some clarification on where I stand with PSLF, as it seems many of you have had recent luck or are getting close.

I have submitted all paperwork under the PSLF and TEPSLF, including any updated instructions over the last few years. My loans are with MOHELA – 2 loans ($4K & $32K). I never switched to IDR or SAVE in 2023 after the SCOTUS ruling, as I didn’t see the need to with my PSLF so close to being forgiven or I should be forgiven and owed a refund?

Under my PSFL tracker, it shows 101, with 19 payments to 120. Great! 19 payments to go on the surface. But then I dug deeper and realized I have 176 eligible payments. Of these 101 are qualifying, 75 need employment certification, and 1 ineligible payment – guessing from Jan 2024. Not sure why they need employment certification, as that has been submitted.

I should say that when payments restarted in Oct 2023, after 1 payment I was put into some forbearance status while things updated from an administrative error than they did in early 2024. I continue to pay my min. monthly payment of $280.00 each month.
However, when I look at my payment counts in the tracker, all 176 of them. It shows the following.
From Oct 1st, 2007 to Sept 2017, it shows the following: PSLF, TEPSLF - Qualifying - Special Waiver These payments from 2007-2017 equal 120 payments.

My questions are:

  1. Am I in the waiting phase here? Should I contact MOHELA? I logged onto StudentAid.gov and it shows my balance there as well.
  2. Is there a place in my portal with MOHELA or StudentAid I should be reviewing to ensure things are on the right track or something else I can share here with all of you for guidance?
  3. If I am forgiven shortly, what happens to the additional 56 payments? Looking at what I paid those months x 56 payments that is a hefty sum.
I like to consider myself knowledgeable and on top of things, but this has been a long road, with confusion, politics, and uncertainty. Thanks in advance for any guidance or advice.
