Final Fantasy XIV subscription question.

Hopefully this is a suitable question for this subreddit.
Simple question though, if I do, say, a 6 month subscription to FFXIV then let it lapse and sign up again a couple weeks/months later will I be able to maintain progress or characters? Or must one start anew if they cancel their subscription?
