PHP-LDAP and Using SRV Records

I'm a self-taught programmer. I'm having trouble figuring out where to start an attempt to use SRV records to contact an LDAP server. This would simplify failover for me.
It looks like I need to modify the C source here: https://github.com/php/php-src/blob/master/ext/ldap/ldap.c to somehow opt into using an SRV record.
For reference, here's the php-ldap documentation: http://php.net/manual/en/function.ldap-bind.php
I'm just trying to get an idea of how big this project would be for me.
