Beginner dumb question for template coding

10 years ago I had a website up and running and I used PHP so that I only needed a directory file for my template on my website.. I don’t recall what it was called exactly but I was able to put a short code into all of the pages once I got the directory setup.. can anyone help me with a refresher? I stepped away for a while but omg stuff has changed so much! Be easy on me lol I'm 28 but it's been so long It was legit something like
