Advice About Copper IUD vs. Mirena Coil
Post Body

Hi, I am 24F in the UK and I am going to get a coil fitted tomorrow, which already is my last option really and one that I'm quite worried about. I am booked in for a Mirena but the doctor said she could swap to a Copper IUD on the day, which I said I may want to do after discussing with her and I just wanted people's advice and thoughts.

A bit of background: So I have known I have had PCOS since I was at least 16. Until I was around 21, I used no birth control, my periods were once a year or two and were not too heavy. For contraception, I have been on Desogesterel (Progesterone-only pill) for 3 months and bled everyday, then I had the implant for 6 months and bled everyday, and now I've been on Norethisterone (Progesterone-only pill) for 15 months and I bleed every other week for a week.

My dilemma is that the doctor originally suggested the Mirena, but I think she may have suggested this because I have lots of periods now. However, before birth control I had no period and it seems as though the hormonal contraceptives mess with my periods, libido, weight and general emotional stability. Therefore, I am quite reluctant to get the Mirena coil since it's a hormonal option.

My current opinion is that the Copper IUD may be better for me as a non-hormonal option so that I can theoretically go back to how I was before any of these hormonal options because I'm quite fed up with having the hormones mess with my body. But also I seem to see a lot of people get the Mirena coil so I'm not sure if the Copper coil is actually any good.

Tl;dr: I have tried a few different hormonal contraceptives and get very frequent periods. Thinking of getting the Copper IUD instead of the Mirena because I don't want my body to be messed with by hormones anymore but Mirena seems to be a more popular option.

Anyone have any advice or words of wisdom?
