How the hell does competitive work???

So the other day I was playing in comp, I’m fairly new to the over watch scene so I’m only silver 1. Anyway, I had gotten to the point where I got 5 wins and under 14 losses, which is supposed to grant a rank up. I thought I was getting into gold 5. Instead it put me right back into silver 1??? Like I didn’t move at all and I’m very confused. This is the only game that I know of where things like this happens. Could someone please explain to me how this is possible?
