It's good.
I know, I know. I'm a sooky baby who needs a medal to feel good and it's bunk stats and im an idiot for using it to prove I'm playing well and every other argument why it's a dumb system.
But let's let's a step back.
Overwatch is an old ass game now, and the people on these forums especially are typically veterans who've been playing forever. And more importantly, people who are invested in the game as a casual e sport. If you exist in that vacuum, absolutely, the medal system is bad.
But the medal system has been around since the game started, so let's try and look at it with fresh eyes. You boot up overwatch, you're playing it for the first time, and you're loving it. You're playing Lucio and you notice you have silver healing. Oh no, you think, I'm letting my team down. You do the classic 'gamer sit forward in your chair' cos it's getting real. You play harder, you pull out all the stops, and you snatch back that gold healing medal and you feel like a champion.
That's what it's there for. To make the player feel like a winner.
Sometimes it's easy to forget what overwatch is, because of how the community and especially the toxicity is so interwoven with the game.
But its just that, a game. It's meant to be fun, and it's meant to make the player feel accomplished.
The medal system is good because that's exactly what it does - I have a gold? Fuck yeah I'm crushing it
