Before I say anything, I really want to emphasize that I don't want this post and its comment section to be a warzone. At the end of the day, we are all people who enjoy the same game yeah? :)
Anyways, so to this day I've noticed that a few discussions are still held in regard to Mercy and whether or not she's broken. I constantly hear either that she's broken or that she's one of the worst supports currently and so I wanted to see what the general public's consensus is with her. I'd also like to break her core kit down a bit to help gain a bit of a broader view for some in regard to her kit, along with my personal observation/opinion. *TLDR at bottom\*
- Caduceus Staff - Either heals with constant unlimited beam of 55hps or unlimited beam of damage boost of 25 percent, both to one ally at a time, limited range of said ally for beam usage being 15 meters. I honestly feel like this is all fine personally, she has an unlimited steady stream of heals but for compensation for it, her hps isn't the highest, but just enough to not feel useless. I hear some people complain about damage boost but with damage boost being her only source of damage output I seriously feel like it's fine personally, of course feel free share your own opinion! However, from what I've seen, the highest damage amplified numbers that I've seen from a Mercy was 2,500 damage in a match. Typically, I see the range of her damage amplification being from 1,000-1,500. So personally, comparing those damage numbers to characters like nearly any other support, I'd say her damage output is fine truthfully, especially since its entirely reliant on another teammate anyways.
- Guardian Angel- Fly to any ally within 30 meters, pressing various input keys causes different flight maneuvers, if said flight maneuvers are used during flight, has a cooldown of 2.5-3 seconds depending on how long flight duration last. However basic straight-line flight to target grants cooldown of 1.5 seconds. Guardian angel is definently an ability that got changed a bit, if not the most from her kit since the
launch of OW2. I'm overall fine with how it is currently though, it's not oppressive to the point of
Mercy being able to contest an entire point on her own against a full enemy team, but it's also not
harsh enough where a Mercy still can't thrive with survivability if in good positioning and proper
GA usage. Keeping in mind that its entirely reliant on her teammates positioning and how she's just
as defenseless if not more so than Baby Dva if caught by herself. I understand for some it can be
annoying to watch the moth fly around, but I believe being annoying is just kind of destined to
happen with any character that has high mobility, such as a good Lucio or Wrecking Ball. - Resurrection- Revives a singular previous fallen ally, has a cast duration of 2 seconds, reduces speed by 75% and slightly increases hitbox. Must have LOS for initiate of rez cast and be within 5 meters, LOS requirement is lost once cast begins along with range limit increased to 7 meters, has a cooldown of 30 seconds.
This is probably the most talked about ability in her kit, next to damage boost interesting enough.
I'm sure this will be the take that everyone comments on first, however I'll be honest, I truthfully
don't find much of an issue with the ability. It often has high risks with high rewards; however, I
know the real heavily complaint is some of the rez techs that a Mercy can take advantage of. Such
as starting a rez and slowly falling off the side of the platform to give yourself cover, or super jump
rez over onto the other side of the wall, or even just being on high ground but within range to
crouch and rez an ally on low ground from said high ground. In my personal opinion, not
everything I've mentioned is a massive skill-check, but I personally am usually impressed when a I
see a Mercy commit such rez's.
I personally, again this is all just us freely expressing our opinions, but I see it as okay since
realistically, with OW2 having only one tank, it makes getting off rez's even more difficult I'd say.
Especially if the rez is for the tank since the tank is the space holder, and if your tank is down then
you most likely have just lost a ton of space since there's only one tank, so it would be nearly
impossible to secure an actual useful and game-changing rez if limited to LOS for entire duration. I
also feel like it would kind of take away a bit of the skill expression that rez has almost? I know that
may sound weird but typically I can tell a solid Mercy from a noob Mercy based on her ally target
priorities, GA usage, and rez techniques/decisions.
I honestly never understood the different between characters like Kiriko or Lifeweaver who can
often save their tank from death many times, with abilities that are not only on a shorter cooldown,
but also not as a risk to the user, along with Kiriko being able to even use the ability on herself if
need be, or even Baptiste with his immortality field, or Ana with her Nade, while Mercy having an
ability that can save her tank/ally from death, cannot be used on herself, and it often being risky to
use. Along with having a long cooldown, topped with leaving you as a statue for 2 seconds which
can leave your other allies vulnerable without your healing/support.
I mean from what I've seen, rez has an average use of 4-5 times per match, while nearly every other
support ability can be used more consecutively with an average of more than 10 times per match
I'm pretty sure. I feel if rez was nerfed in any way, such as requiring LOS for the entire duration of
rez, that it would just bring Mercy's character value down even more since such simple LOS rez's are
a lot more difficult to achieve, especially in mid to higher ranks where people genuinely start to gain
more awareness.
TLDR- I feel like that Mercy has honestly been the most balanced she has been since the
launch of OW2. Non-oppressive movement, but still just enough to still be engaging and
useful. Okayish utility/damage output, however completely dependent on teammates.
Along with a high-risk high-reward ability to save a fallen ally, additionally with having
a few knowledge/skill checks of the ability so it can actually be usable in higher ranks
when you can no longer just do a simple full LOS rez since people have lot more
awareness and agency.
Remember to be kind when discussing this! Just remember the simple golden rule that
we were taught in elementary, treat others how you want to be treated!! <3
