So need some help deciding what to do before our next session Sunday.
Last night the fight with buppido went long and had to end with 2 ghouls left 1 at 2hp the other at 20hp and buppido down to 26hp. The druid and warlock have dropped once and most everyone is at or close to under 10hp. Most the party is spent on abilities, the Bard is dry on spells, the 2 warlocks still have spells, and the druid only has 1 left. The barbarian is on his last rage with 3 rounds left. The barbarian and druid are restrained in place by the "arms of the dead" ability I modified a bit from orcus.
Here's my issue.
Earlier in the combat the Bard freed stool and the just turned young hook horrors and told them to to take off into the fungal thicket headed to area 3 but on the way attacked and finished a ghoul (ruined final plan right there). This is where the party lost track of them. After a few rounds stool popped back out of the thicket with rump a dump who he had run into to "check on the group".
When this happened he Bard used disonate whisper and forced buppido to move away, since the other entrance was blocked by the warlocks he went towards the area 3 into the ticket and tried to run through stool and RaD. He got through and turned and acid sprayed the 2. Stool lost all but 1 hp. Stool then poofed his distress spores 240 range which would signal the myconids in area 3.
Here's what I think should happen as I feel I've been forced into this action.
Buppido is going to use his chromatic beam, it's a 60ft by 5ft Straight line beam, stool it's between buppido and literally anyone else he can target so it WILL kill stool out right unless it rolls ridiculously low. Following that it is the 5 young hook horrors, who should turn and fight to avenge their baby sitter/trainer, followed by the myconids from area 3 coming to stools rescue almost as calvary.
I highly anticipate this combination of attacks will probably kill buppido. I worked really hard to not "steal" the kill from the group. I even designed it for them to kill him, he then raises as undead before the hook horrors drop in on him and finish him (which again was supposed to reveal they could fight now, but they already did kill something in the fight)
So do I have the myconids come in as the calvary and essential clean up? How do I NOT do that? It seems like the only logical sequence of events based on what's happened.
The group still have to get the rod and close the portal summoning orcus afterwards so is that enough to not feel like it was stolen?
