It is extraordinary that they accomplished turning amazing writing into extreme drudgery. There is no chemistry. There is no heart. Not a trace of the humor or character presence that Gabaldon created. Claire is tedious and lacking any semblance of strength or guile. Jamie is not smart and funny. Even the wedding night isn't sexy. With the original material - how could you possibly fuck up the wedding night?
This is a masterpiece of disappointment, starting with the obviously wrong choice of actress for Claire. Milquetoast. Everything hinges on her and they positively blew it. Could they at least have gotten her hair and eyes right? Her appearance was a driving story-line that could easily been recreated.
Bummer.
Edit 1 The sets, costumes and makeup - especially Jamie's scars are first class. The casting of Gellis, Dugal, and the others are really good as well.
Edit 2 This is a story about two people who are not just survivors, but who are leaders of people. No matter what shitty circumstances they are not victimized due to their strong character attributes.
This show is a portrayal of two people as victims. It is written and played as a such. This is the reason why it is such a disappointment and why I doubt they can eventually salvage it.
But if this series was not based on the books, I would be all in because it is beautiful. And would agree with many of your comments!
