Hi all, I'm a complete beginner when it comes to kayaking and am planning to drive up to Scotland soon for a few weeks. While I'm there I plan to do some kayaking to some islands in the middle of Loch lomond and camp for a night or two, I can hire a kayak but it's rather expensive and for the price I may as well buy my own for future use and not have to worry if the rental gets damaged or stolen. My question is firstly, are these inflatable kayaks safe and be ok for lakes and secondly if so what are some affordable decent ones? One I'm looking at so far is the Aquatec Hudson single or possibly an itiwit model?
Thanks
I've had inflatable and rigid. Prefer rigid but they both have pros and cons. Inflatable are easier to transport and carry. Unfortunately their light design often makes them very prone to getting blown around, less stable and not as easily controlled by comparison. That's not to say they don't have their place.
Loch Lomond is great but can be prone like many lochs to having wind building over the water. It sounds like you're a newbie so I'll say don't overestimate what you're skills are, use safety equipment, it's invaluable, learn basic water safety and have fun. It's worth being aware that with lltnp there's byelaws that make it illegal to camp in certain areas march to end sept, and others illegal without a permit. There's other offences there too. I'd familiarise yourself with them as it's a potential £500 fine per offence
